Covington is located at the fork of the Bogue Falaya and Tchefuncte rivers. Commerce used to arrive by boat in the city, thanks to the convenience of these rivers. The town was originally established by John Wharton Collins under the name of Wharton in 1813. There are two common stories about how the name became Covington. Historians believe the city was renamed after General Leonard Covington, a hero of the war of 1812. Others believe the city may have been named after Covington, KY, which is where the town officials received their beloved Blue Grass whiskey. Either way, both cities carry the namesake of Leonard Covington.
