Mandeville was founded in 1834 by the Marigny de Mandeville family, who owned nearly 1/3 of the city of New Orleans. They originally developed the city as a lakeside summer resort for wealthy citizens in the area. You can see historic properties that remain evidence of this in older sections of the city, such as Lakeshore Drive. Mandeville was conveniently connected to the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain when the Causeway was built in the 1950s, which is the longest bridge in the world. Today, the city has many established neighborhoods with upscale dining and shopping nearby. You can enjoy nature at the Fontainebleau State Park, which offers cabins and campsites. The Tammany Trace is a nearby bike trail offering 31 miles of leafy, outdoor adventures.
