Slidell is the largest city on the northeast shore of Lake Pontchartrain in Southeast Louisiana. The city was founded around 1882 when the construction of a major railroad from New Orleans to New York began to take shape. The New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad eventually established a building camp in the area, which led to the development of the city. Slidell was officially charted as a town in 1888 by the Louisiana legislature. The Slidell shipyard was a major development that allowed the city to contribute to the national effort of both World Wars.
